BOLIDEN Electrifies The Trolley Lines of Two of Its Mines

Boliden is investing SEK 300 million in the expansion of electrified transport at the two open-pit mines of Aitik and Kevitsa, both producing copper concentrates. Electric trolley lines have been piloted at both sites and will be gradually extended. At Aitik and Kevitsa, 14 and 13 mining trucks, respectively, will, in total, be converted from diesel to electric.

Overall, the system will be able to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from transportation over the mines’ life spans by 15% for Aitik and 9% for Kevitsa. It is estimated that Boliden will reduce diesel consumption by 5,500 cubic metres per year when the investment is completed. At the same time, productivity gains will also be made as the electrically powered trucks can operate at a higher speed. The work environment for drivers will also be improved, partly thanks to lower noise and reduced need for maintenance.
